The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity and possesses all the characteristics of personality and deity, including intellect (1 Corinthians 2:10-13), emotions (Ephesians 4:30), will (1 Corinthians 12:11), eternality (Hebrews 9:14), omni-presence (Psalm 139:7-10), omniscience (Isaiah 40:13-14), omnipotence (Romans 15:13), and truthfulness (John 16:13).
The Holy Spirit takes up residence in every believer, uniting each with the Body of Christ, the Church. The Spirit never departs from the Church or the weakest of believers, and is always present to bear witness to Christ (John 14:16-17; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 12:13; Ephesians 1:13-14, 2:21-22).
The ministry of the Holy Spirit encompasses several functions, including convicting the world of sin, drawing unbelievers to the cross of Christ, administering spiritual gifts to the Church, assisting believers in praying to the Father, securing the salvation of believers, providing comfort, and assurance of salvation (John 6:44, 14:26, 16:7-11; Acts 1:8; Romans 8:16,26; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; 2 Corinthians 1:22; Ephesians 4:7-12,30).
The gift of tongues and other “sign” miracles were particular to the apostolic age and essential for the Church’s founding and the writing of the New Testament. Therefore, speaking in tongues is not a requisite of receiving the baptism of the Spirit (Acts 4:8,31; 1 Corinthians 13:8-12; 2 Corinthians 12:12; Hebrews 2:4).
