Ordinances of the Church

Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the only two ordinances of the Church. These are scriptural means of testimony for the Church in this age.

Christian baptism (Acts 8:36-39) is a solemn and beautiful testimony of a believer’s faith in the crucified, buried, and risen Savior, and his or her union with Christ, in death to sin and resurrection to new life (Romans 6:1-11). Baptism by immersion is the appropriate method for this testimony. Baptism is a sign of fellowship and identification with the visible Body of Christ (Acts 2:41-42).

Jesus established the Lord’s Supper on the night He was betrayed, and He instructed that it should be observed in the Church until the end of time as a remembrance of His sacrifice (Matthew 26:26-28). Open communion is our practice, offering the elements to all who wish to participate, while emphasizing each individual’s responsibility to examine his or her faith before partaking (1 Corinthians 10:15-21, 11:23-34). The elements of communion, bread and grape juice, are only symbolic of the body and blood of Christ. We reject the doctrine of transubstantiation, which holds that the elements are transformed into the substance of Christ’s body and blood.
